The site of the Ram Mandir has been a point of contention and legal dispute for several decades. According to Hindu belief, the site is the birthplace of Lord Ram and was the location of a temple dedicated to him. However, in the 16th century, the Mughal emperor Babur built a mosque, known as the Babri Masjid, at the same place.
